Best Smartphone Bike Mount – Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag – The last time I tried to use a smartphone on a bike the phone really was not that smart. It was more about just having my phone a long for the ride on case of emergency or just to call the little woman to describe a beautiful site on my ride. Fast forward to 2012 I have the brand new Cannondale Synapse and Samsung Galaxy S 3 Android Smartphone. It stands to reason that I would want my Galaxy S3 to serve as my bike computer and I would just need a mount. I thought this should be a piece of cake. I was wrong.
I first began looking for handlebar mounts because that’s how the cyclocomputers mount on a bike. I learned quickly that there were only two types available. The first type is for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s and iPhone 5. The other type is junk. In fact all sorts of horror stories of $700 smartphones skidding down the pavement. I realized it was time to re-evaluate my needs. The smartphone needs to be protected and secured in a safe but easily viewable and accessible location on the bike. The smartphone should NOT be mounted unprotected.
Armed with my new found plan I scoured the internet for two evening before I stumbled on the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag Nyc Black 6 X 3 X 2.5”. Right from the beginning i did not care for the look of the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag. The colors, and texture did not appeal to me but functionally it seemed to be what I was looking for. I bought one in”NYC BLACK”.
Upon receiving the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag I was pleasantly surprised with the construction and appearance. It was not as ugly as it appeared in all the internet pictures. I thought to myself I just might like this thing after all. The Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag has a lid that has Velcro around all 4 edges to keep the top securely closed. I found the strength of the Velcro to be about perfect. The phone is installed from under the top at the location where the top is attached to the bag. The phone is inserted through a slit in an elastic pouch. The first few times the phone was pretty difficult to insert and remove but now the elastic seems to be conforming to the Galaxy S3 it’s a “just right” amount of difficulty. The phone is VERY SECURE. On the surface is a clear cover that is quite thick but very clear. Reading and controlling the touchscreen were problem free.
Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag Interior Storage:
The capacity of storage was greater than I expected. I am able to carry my wallet and either a compact camera or a Kimber Pepper Blaster. Typically I leave my wallet home and take the camera and pepper blaster 🙂
Mounting the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag:
Mounting the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag is a simple as placing the bag on the handlebar stem and stretching the little heavy duty bungee cord around and placing it on the opposing clip. The mount is very secure and the rubber is clingy enough to prevent the bag from moving or twisting.
Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag On The Road:
I found the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag worked very well at keeping the phone safe and secure. The top stayed closed, the bag never moved, reading the screen and operating the touchscreen were flawless. However it’s use is not without a few limitations and tradeoffs that are more of inherent problems with the smartphone rather than the case.
- Inserting the phone – To make the phone easier to operate while in the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag i disabled the lock screen. A side affect of this is when inserting the phone the side buttons get depressed turning thing on and messing with the volume.
- Side Buttons – Aside from the problems mentioned above because the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag is a one size fits all you need to know where the side buttons are located as they are difficult to feel through the elastic that secures the phone. Keep in mind though there should not ne much need to fiddle with those buttons while riding anyhow.
- Screen Timeout – Not a fault of the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag but the smartphones were not designed to have the screen constantly illuminated or even visible. If you need to constantly watch your progress get a dedicated bike computer. For me I only look at the screen when I pause my ride. I do plan on seeking an app that will keep the screen on but barely illuminated.
Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag Conclusion:
The case has reflective piping, ample storage and holds the smartphone securely. The $35 Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag works well if you understand the limitations of the smartphone platform itself. If you need a method to mount your smartphone to your bike I can without hesitation recommend the Koki Mozzie Smartphone Pocket Bag.
